How to Avoid Data Overages

In my over 5 years of working as customer service representative for different Telecommunication companies in the US, more than 70 percent of the customers asked why their bill is so high??

They will call really frustrated and will call you by different names, they will yell at you, they will not listen to you, no matter what; all they know is they should not be charge more than what they signed for. As a customer care, I was trained to be polite, courteous and to take full responsibility of their issue and to provide a resolution as quickly as possible.

In our team, most customer care gives adjustments just for the sake of finishing up the call or get a perfect survey score. But not me, I don't give any credits if it's not valid because I am more of providing long-term resolution.

One of the main reason why customers bill is high is DATA USAGE this is very common nowadays obviously because of different smartphones. Smartphones are the computers of the new generation we spend maybe 30 percent or more of our day just by checking at it. in the USA Unlimited Internet package is already phased out. Data plan starts at 2GB for $30 up to 10GB for $70+/- some of Americans doesn't know they've signed up for a limited data plan. Therefore the best way to help them is by educating them, by letting them see what they have on their account and give tips how to avoid it.

So let's get to the point...

How can you save money by avoiding data overages?

First things first, PLEASE BE INFORMED that your smartphone requires internet, so it can perform what it's built for, i.e, Email, Facebook updates, Instant Messaging, News, Alerts , Cloud, VoIP calling, Video calling, MMS, Weather, Radio, Podcast , etc.. Companies like at&t , Verizon, T-mobile, Sprint etc. Will not allow you to get a smartphone without a getting a data plan. They make too much money out it.

To avoid getting overages, TURNING OFF your data when you're not using it, i.e During the evening while you are sleeping, when it is inside your pocket. Every app installed on your phone are consuming your data plan.

Have you noticed those advertisements while you are playing games or any free apps? just by that little ad, your data is already being used. Again as long as your Mobile data is ON, it is being used. Even you are not holding the phone itself.

  1. Go to SETTINGS
  2. Tap MORE SETTINGS
  3. Tap TURN OFF Mobile Data and Data Roaming

Turn it back on if you will use apps that require internet connection. (i,e. Facebook, MMS, Skype)
